- The nomination of Washington Oaks Gardens Historic District was successfully negotiated through the National
Park Service and the Florida Department of State and the District was added to the
National Register of Historic.
- The FUND Committee was established with Vice President Don Denby as
Chair. They have identified the projects and the scope of work for each. They are currently
researching the best funding source for each project.
They will kick-off the FUND Campaign solicitations in September and
make appropriate grant applications.
- We celebrated Mr. O. D. Young's 135th birth date on Tuesday October
27th with a Commemoration of the Historic District, guest speakers, a
ribbon cutting and tours of the significant structures in the
Historic District and the Grand Opening of the restored Office the Friends Gift
Shop. The restoration was the winner of the Statewide CSO Project of the Year.
- Gift Shop procedures were established and numerous volunteers have
been trained. Current hours are 11 to 3 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Wednesday has been added as staffing permits. The Gift Shop is now
self-sustaining and producing income for the Friends.
- Completed the planting of mature citrus trees in the north citrus grove to assure
continued and future harvests.
- Continued monthly Second Saturday Plant Sales with added activities for October Herbs
in the Gardens, February Citrus Harvest Festival and December Holiday Plants,
additionally conducted plant workshops for Dish Gardens in November and Cactus in May. Monthly
lectures were tried as a fund raiser, but was halted for lack of participation.
- Sponsored the Holiday Tea with Mrs. Claus for 5 ~ 7 year olds with crafts, stories, photos, songs and sharing with
Mrs. Claus, as well as provided support for Holiday in the Gardens with sales of baked goods and refreshments, citrus, Gift Shop, plants, Santa
photos and Chance Drawings.
- Sponsored the Annual Earth Day Celebration 3rd week in April, collecting gate receipts, selling Friends baked
goods and refreshments, citrus, merchandise, plants, and supporting the Kids Activities Area with sponsorship from the Flagler
Kiwanis Club and others. The event netted over $8,000.
- Sponsored of very successful Kids and Adult Saltwater workshops in July.
- Converted accounting record to Quick Books and established on-line banking procedures and
guidelines.
- Continue to publish Bi-Monthly Newsletter and maintain washinatonoaks.org
- Increased Membership to 320 from 254, a 25% increase. Our goal was 300. We attribute the
growth primarily to the opening of the Friends Gift Shop.
- Received District 3 sponsored grant of $500 for new ADA parking space next to new Gift
Shop.
