Metal Detector Policy
Metal detectors may be used on the beachside only. Metal detectors are never to be used on the garden side of the park.
Metal detectors may only be used in the zone between the waterline and base of the dune. They are not permitted above the high tide line or into the dune system.
Any dug hole associated with the use of a metal detector must be refilled to the contour of pre-dig conditions using the excavated material.
The use of metal detectors during sea turtle nesting season is permitted, however operators must stay away from marked nests and avoid disturbance to the surrounding area of a nest.
Artifacts discovered in state parks should be left in their original location unless threatened (erosion, fire, etc.)
Ownership of all artifacts discovered on state-managed lands including state parks is vested in the Department of Historical Resources.
The use of metal detectors on Washington Oaks beach is at the discretion of the park manager, and this policy can be changed at any time.
